People were stopping in the middle of intersections like idiots to take pictures of the moon. Somehow, the taxis allowed it to happen. You’ll never get it right, she wanted to yell. But people were afraid to look and feel. They wanted to look and pass the feeling along without sitting in it. You need to sit in it you idiots, she wanted to yell. Put your phones away. The wasting of time and light annoyed her.

She knew better than to take a picture of the moon and continued underground. On the train, a small white dog crawled out of a woman’s bag and sniffed the ankles of those standing nearby. The dog had a black patch of fur around one eye and grayish spots near its legs that looked like pitted shadows. Here is the moon, she thought. Here’s the thing you all missed. The moon is on the train, orbiting in small circles, panting with one black eye. When the train stopped because of traffic ahead, she was happy to be sad and to sit with the moon.
