She needed to try and still be a person. Everyone told her to make sure she took care of herself. She was having trouble doing that. Her friend took her to a nail salon. She worried about breaking down in such a small place, especially around others enjoying self care, others not carrying pain. She kept it together and chose a black polish for her nails. She sat down and handed the small glass bottle full of pain to the manicurist, telling her that she wanted black because she was heartbroken. The manicurist asked what happened. She debated what to say, but told the truth, which made her eyes well with tears.

The manicurist looked at the bottle and said, “This is not black. This is dark blue. I will get you black.”

And she did.
