We were playing never have I ever and I said, “Never have I ever eaten a blue food.” Then, as always happens, we fell into discussing the notion that there are no naturally occurring blue foods. How even blueberries are actually more purple than blue.

And then he said, “what about the robin’s eggs?” He gestured towards the nest we had discovered earlier on the porch.

We all looked at each other with preordained shame because we knew what we had to do.
